Topographic surveys are used to map the contours of the ground and existing features (manmade or natural) of the land, either slightly below or above the surface. This includes things like trees, manholes, sidewalks, walkways, streets, utility poles, and retaining walls.
These surveys show size of and distance between such features but also focuses on the distance of these features from the ground. Topographic surveys are useful in construction projects because they show details of the land framework before improvements are made and safeguard against problems caused by disturbing features that may be unseen.
